HAPPY NEW YEAR!

From everyone at Special Olympics of Delaware County:  We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Now that the busy season is over for all of us, it's time to get back to work.  We have several changes to SODC, some are exciting and some are not so exciting.

First, be sure to ask about our new transportation policy.  Due to funding cuts from DCBDD, we will be changing how we transport athletes to practices and games.  Ask your coach for a transportation request form and your need will be assessed by Sharon Taylor.  If you are found in need of transportation, Sharon will help to coordinate how you get to practices and games.

Second, Board Member Mark Carroll is organizing the Playin' Possum 50K trail run to benefit SODC.  Be sure to check out their website for more information.  http://www.possumraceseries.com/#

Also be sure to "Like" them on Facebook to receive updated information.  https://www.facebook.com/#!/PlayinPossum50k

Stay tuned for Basketball information and upcoming Spring sports!

Anthony Billups graced us this weekend with his music and stories of hope.  He performed at Alpha's Variety Show, Surf's Up, on Friday July 20 for two sets.  During his sets he invited the harmonica prodigy Garrison to perform with him as well as one of Innervision's trio. Anthony's brother Nick was on hand to sing several songs including Garth Brooks's "I've got friends in low places," and Anthony sang his single "Special" commemorating his life growing up with a special needs brother. Saturday he played at Satin and Steel's Biker Bash and Poker Run.  Anthony's family was nice enough to sell t-shirts, cds and other memorabilia with the proceeds to benefit SODC.  Thanks to the Billups Family for raising over $200.00 for our organization.  Check out Anthony's website at http://anthonybillups.com/ and like him on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/#!/anthonybillups).

BIKER BASH Results are IN!

THANK YOU SATIN AND STEEL!!!
Satin and Steel's biker bash and poker run was successful to say the least.  I did not get a count on how many bikers attended the poker run, but Satin and Steel presented a check to Sharon for a total of $11,702.00!  Amazing.  Thank you ladies for all your hard work.  The bands were great, including Anthony Billups and his brother Nick.  Truly, it was a SPECIAL evening.

Fundraising Options

Get on Board to help Special Olympics Delaware County (SODC) raise funds this summer.  SODC is responsible for raising all of our own funds to run our program.  We do not receive any funds from the state or national levels of Special Olympics.  We do receive help from DCBDD but we still have to work hard at raising funds to continue to run a successful program and take on new athletes.

We have very many exciting things going on this summer, so you can pick what sounds best to you or you can participate in all of them!!  Following is a list of our events:

Buehler's Shopping Spree - We are selling 500 tickets at $5.00 each for a chance to win a 90-second shopping spree at Buehler's Grocery Store in Delaware.  The winner will be drawn on July 31 and the shopping spree will be on August 1.  I like to call this The Supermarket Sweep (for those who remember the TV program).  How fun is this?  Tickets are going fast but we still have some left so let me know if you would like to purchase a ticket(s).

Satin and Steel 1st Annual Biker Bash - July 21, 2012  This local Delaware group approached SODC in February and wanted to pick our organization to fund raise for this year.  It is getting bigger and bigger each time I talk with them and we are hoping for a big turn out.  Even if you do not have a Bike to ride in the event, come on out and support SODC.  I hear there will be 3 bands and many vendors at this event.  Sounds like fun, fun, fun.

Battle of the Bags - August 18, 2012  2nd Annual Corn hole Tournament.  Last year was the 1st year for this event and it was a great success.  SODC is the sponsor of this event.  I have attached the brochure for it as well. Go to www.battleofthebags.com for more information.  Your athlete/you can fundraise for this event by going to
https://www.firstgiving.com/SODC/battle-of-the-bags-2012 and setting up a fundraising page.  I will be happy to help anyone who wants to set up a page and join in on raising funds and or registering to play.

Amvets Poker Run - August 18, 2012 - Yes that is right, two events on one day.  I don't have all of the particulars but the Amvets called us last week and wanted us to know they chose us for the recipients of their annual poker run.  It just keeps getting better and better.  More information to follow.

Bowl-a-thon and Swim-a-thon and possibly a Basketball event will happen in September.  This will be a fundraiser that the athletes can participate in and raise funds for their organization.  It will help our athletes take pride in helping to raise funds to continue the success of SODC.

That is our events for the summer so please join in and have some fun while supporting SODC.

REWARD PROGRAMS:  We also have signed up with many stores for reward programs.  You can support SODC just by shopping at your regular stores shown below:

Kroger's - Sign up for SODC through your Kroger Plus Shoppers Card.  You have to have your card to sign up, you cannot use your telephone number to sign up.  I have attached a letter explaining the sign-up process.

Gordon's Food Service - GFS - When shopping at GFS at checkout they will ask if you are with any particular group and all you do is tell them you are supporting Special Olympics of Delaware County.  Please be sure to say the Delaware County as our Area 6 director has an account there as well.  We will receive a monetary reward from them on a quarterly basis.

Delaware Community Market, 222 East Williams St., Delaware, OH  This is fun little market/deli, fun to go to lunch there and pick up vegetables and fruit.  Again, all you have to do is telling them you are supporting Special Olympics of Delaware County and we get 15% of your purchase.

Treasure House, 186 E. Winter St., Delaware, OH  - This is a thrift store that has opened in Delaware.  SODC will receive 15% of any donated items that sell.  So, if you are cleaning out your house and want to get rid of some items that someone else can still use, travel on over to Treasure House and make your contribution.  We have already received a couple of checks from the.
